During play, not only children but also adults train various skills and social behaviors, passing their time pleasurably at home, in specialized locations (casinos, play halls) and public areas (cafes). Play is defined by the fact that for the most part is serves no specific purpose,the only aim being the game itself, which differentiates it from serious activities and everyday life.
This book presents toys that not only serve such purpose-free activities but that additionaly have successful designs. They were created by well-known designers with high esthetic values or have gradually developed an optimal and up-to-date form. Many classic toys have such 'Darwinist' design, which has evolved trough gradual changes. Originally, all toys were homemade and consisted of precisely the same objects that are still found in all homes today - dolls, balls, rattles and animal figures, all of which have been found thoughout all eras and all cultures. Thus a stone-age marble game was found in Australia, girls in an ancient Egypt played with dolls, and Roman soldiers rolled dice for the belongings of Christ. (...)"
